“How to Draw a Bunny” by John W. Walter
“How to Draw a Bunny” (2002, USA), Directed by John W. Walter
Music by Max Roach • Thurston Moore
Plunging, as one critic put it, into “a rabbit hole of an art-world wonderland,” Walter’s portrait of the enigmatic, neo-Dadaist artist-prankster Ray Johnson features an inspired score that alternates, in aptly collage-like style, between Max Roach’s sly, improvisational drum solos and a soundscape by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. Walter observes, “I would have loved to have shot Ray making a collage, show his hands over a lot of different surfaces. Using Max Roach, then, becomes a double for the hands of a master artist.” Roy Lichtenstein, Billy Name, Christo, Chuck Close, James Rosenquist, and others reflect on Johnson’s mysterious life and death.
